Why at the beginning?

Training in safety (CPR/First Aid/etc) is a good thing to do right at the beginning of the year. It's a good thing to do, period. And it should also be rehearsed and refreshed constantly. With adventure comes risk and injury. We need to be prepared.

What if I can't make the date?

For anyone concerned, if you can't make the Saturday, we can schedule ad-hoc certifications over the next few weeks. But we want to get as many done in a batch. We have a BIG TROOP.

What if I am a Navigator or new New Adventurer

Navigators (and new Adventurers, too) must complete their first aid badge. There are numerous requirements they have to complete (see pages 174 - 180 of the Navigators and Adventurers Handbook). Most of the first aid requirements can be done as a self-study. Or, they can get them done in a single day, and you can get certified with them.

How do the Woodlands Trailmen figure in?

One of the best things about Trail Life is when Woodlands boys get to see how exciting it is to do the things the older boys get to do. So getting their swim tests, getting CPR-certified, and learning the older boys' First Aid skills is a great look-forward. But we need to balance that with the steady, consistent showing-up and learning at the meetings. So, even though they will learn a lot of things that they will also learn in the meetings - the point is reinforcement. If a boy sees their dad, their Trail Guide, and older boys in the troop pursuing something, they will want to as well. And, learning first aid skills is never a one-and-done. We want to continue to learn and grow in this area.

They can learn good skills around the Navigators/Adventurers, and participate in patrol activities that are designed for fun and relationship-building. As an added bonus, they can help others learn too!

Why are we charging for this?

We are only charging for the Red Cross CPR Certification and for first aid starter kits... both are optional. Trailmen can learn with the self-study approaches in the handbook. But carrying the certification is a big deal, especially to younger hearts. So we are offering it. But you can certainly come and participate in the whole thing without spending a dime.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Woodlands Parent - RSVP on Trail Life Connect for the CPR / First Aid Day if it fits your schedule.
Navigator/Adventurer (and their parents) - RSVP for the CPR / First Aid Day.
Trail Guides - RSVP and encourage your trailmen's parents to RSVP and come if they can make it. Also, stick around for the security briefing at 1PM
All Adults - Your CPR training and certification is FIRST at 7AM, and the kids are second at 9AM. We need adults that get certified in the morning to help certify the boys.
